Dr. Larry DeLucas receives the inaugural Distinguished Alumnus Award, December 1991
December 2021 Image of the MonthDr. Lawrence "Larry" DeLucas (left) receives from President Charles A. McCallum, Jr., the inaugural Distinguished Alumnus Award of the UAB National Alumni Society during the commencement ceremony on December 8, 1991. DeLucas earned five degrees from UAB, the BS and MS in Chemistry, the BS in Physiological Optics, the OD, and the PhD in Biochemistry, and in 1982 he joined the faculty of the School of Optometry. In 1991 DeLucas was selected as a payload specialist for the NASA Space Shuttle Program, and he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in June-July 1992 as part of space mission STS-50.

Transplant surgeon Robert Karp interviewed by local media, November 1981
November 2021 Image of the MonthOn November 24, 1981, Dr. Robert B. Karp headed the UAB team that performed a heart transplant at University Hospital, the first heart transplant performed in the southeastern United States. Dr. Karp was a member of the faculty of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Dedication of the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, October 19, 1971
October 2021 Image of the MonthThe Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences was dedicated in formal ceremonies held on October 19, 1971, as the first building constructed for the university's health sciences library. Prior to the opening of the new building, the campus library had been housed within the University Hospital complex since the four-year medical school was established in 1945. When completed in 1971, the new facility was named in honor of Lister Hill, the former Senator and Congressman from Alabama who had spent over four decades in Washington as a proponent of, among others, medical libraries, medical education, and of healthcare for Americans.

Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center opened, September 22, 1996
September 2021 Image of the MonthLeonard Slatkin conducts the National Symphony Orchestra during the official opening of the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on September 22, 1996. The Jemison Concert Hall opened as part of the first phase of UAB's new fine arts facility. The building's other venues, the Sirote Theatre, the Odess Theatre, and the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall, would open three years later as part of phase two. A new home for the Department of Theatre, phase three, would be opened in 2005.

A new sign highlights the new University College, 1971
August 2021 Image of the MonthOn August 1, 1971, UAB's College of General Studies was reorganized and renamed as University College, an administrative entity initially consisting of four academic schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Education, and School of Engineering. Dr. George W. Campbell, former dean of the College of General Studies and former director of the Birmingham Extension Center, became the inaugural Vice President for University College. Students Judith Haney and Allen Barra, the editor of the Kaleidoscope student newspaper, helped the university promote the newly renamed entity.

US Men's Soccer Team trains on the UAB campus, July 1996
July 2021 Image of the MonthDuring the 1996 Summer Olympics, Birmingham's Legion Field hosted nine men's and women's soccer matches. UAB provided practice space for several of the teams playing in the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games, including the US men's team.
Earlier this year, UAB was announced as a host for the forthcoming World Games, to be held in Birmingham in July 2022. Visiting athletes, coaches, and officials will be housed in UAB residence halls and four athletic competitions (lacrosse, tug-of-war, racquetball, and squash) will be hosted in venues on the UAB campus. UAB Medicine will also be the official sponsor of medical services for the World Games.

UAB outdoor sculpture, circa 2000
June 2021 Image of the MonthInstalled in front of UAB's Bell Theatre, Central Axis, a cast iron, concrete, and steel piece by artist Harold "Skip" Van Houten, was acquired for the university's permanent collection as part of the 1996-1997 Samuel B. Barker Outdoor Sculpture Competition. The competition was named in honor of arts patron and benefactor Dr. Samuel B. Barker, inaugural dean of the UAB Graduate School and a member of the university faculty for more than thirty years. Dr. Barker, who acquired many art works for UAB, thought that a university should place art where students would experience it on a regular basis.

Bracie Watson elected SGA president, May 1971
May 2021 Image of the MonthIn May 1971 senior Bracie Watson, Jr. (Biology), became the first African American student elected as president of the UAB student government association. Watson was most likely the first African American student in the state of Alabama elected as the president of a student government association outside of the state's historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).

Dedication of Children's Hospital, 1961
April 2021 Image of the MonthOn April 30, 1961, a dedication ceremony was held for the new Children's Hospital in the university medical center. U.S. Senator Lister Hill (Ala.) was the featured speaker at the dedication. Located on Sixth Avenue South, the $2.9 million hospital was a "new concept" in that it was built as a "complete hospital" for children from birth to the age of 18 years. It was the only such institution in the state of Alabama and replaced an older facility located on 30th Street South. Faculty, residents, staff, and students from the medical center have been connected to the hospital since it was first opened.

UAB MedWise Takes the Stage at the Riverchase Galleria, 1994
March 2021 Image of the MonthThe UAB Blazer Band, conducted by band director Clifford Winter, performed for the crowds at the center court stage at the Galleria. UAB MedWise, a life styles and outreach program for senior citizens, was established at UAB in 1991 with George N. Mickwee as program director. In 1993 some 300 UAB personnel from across the university and medical center assisted with the week-long event at Hoover's Galleria. MedWise included health screenings for the community, info talks on topics of interest to seniors, and entertainment by local and national artists.

University College Building No. 1 and Mervyn H. Sterne Library at dusk, circa 1973
February 2021 Image of the MonthUniversity College Building No. 1 and Mervyn H. Sterne Library were among the first four buildings constructed for the new University College campus. The four buildings were dedicated during ceremonies held on May 20, 1973. In September 1983 Building No. 1 was rededicated as the School of Education Building. The education school moved out of its long-time home in 2020, and the building is slated for demolition in order to make way for a new Science and Engineering Complex.
