Michelle Clemon and U.W. ClemonIn 1950 the University of Alabama, through its Birmingham Extension Center — what is now UAB — established the Town and Gown Theatre, led by founding director James F. Hatcher. Town and Gown Theatre gained a reputation for the quality of its productions, with its combination of local community talent and veteran Broadway and Hollywood stars. This digital collection contains programs and playbills from Town and Gown Theatre productions, including both local and some traveling performances. In January 2011, members of the StoryCorps staff parked their Airstream mobile recording studio outside of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to record the stories of local residents. Edited versions of those recorded interviews are available to stream from the UAB Libraries Digital Collections.
