What is a recall?
In order to allow our users access to resources in our collection within a reasonable amount of time, UAB faculty, staff, and students may recall a book that is checked out. Doing so starts the recall process which shortens the original due date of the current user. Once returned and processed, the book is available to the individual who recalled it.
What books are eligible for recalls?
All circulating books may be recalled except for those with short checkout periods, such as from juvenile and textbook collections.
Who is eligible to recall books?
UAB faculty, staff, and students with a current BlazerID.
What happens if books are not returned by the updated due date?
Books borrowed from UAB Libraries are subject to be recalled after two weeks. Failure to return a recalled book by the updated due date will result in a fine of $1.00 per day, and the borrower will be prevented from borrowing again until the book is returned.
How long before recalled books are due? (recall period)
When a recall is issued, the user who has the checked-out book is contacted via email and alerted that the book has been recalled and is due seven days from the time of the initial notification.
How long does the recall requester have to pick up the book?
When a book you requested through a recall becomes available for you to pick up, you will be notified by email or telephone. The library will hold the book for 7 to 10 days after you are notified. Unclaimed books will be reshelved and made available for the next user.
