UAB Libraries offer a variety of study spaces in both Lister Hill and Sterne libraries. From single-user carrels for quiet study to large group rooms designed for collaboration, the Libraries offer reservable, well-equipped and comfortable spaces on a first-come, first-served basis.
Lister Hill Library
Lister Hill Library has 19 study room spaces available for currently enrolled UAB students or current members of the UAB Community seeking to hold short term collaborative or individual study sessions. Reservations can be made online the same day or up to two weeks in advance. Persons making a room reservation must report to the Lister Hill Library HUB Service Desk to check-in, and all group reservations require two or more persons at check-in before a group can enter a group study room.

Sterne Library
Sterne Library has 75 study rooms that individuals with a UAB ONE Card may reserve on a first-come, first-serve basis.
There are 61 single rooms and 13 group study rooms; nine of the group study rooms are on the first floor and four are on the third floor. All single study rooms are located on the third floor. These rooms are available for currently enrolled UAB students, postdocs, faculty and staff. Long term study carrel spaces are available to UAB graduate students, postdocs, faculty and students registered with Disability Student Services. Sterne also offers a Virtual Meeting Room for those in need of a space for Telehealth appointments and other virtual meetings.
Persons making a room reservation must report to the Sterne Library HUB Service Desk to check-in. For group study rooms, there must be at least two group members present at the time of check-out.
Reservations can be made online the same day or up to two weeks in advance. To access reservations, individuals may use the
online portal or the
Library Mobile app.
Individual Study Rooms can be booked for 4 hours, with option to renew once (providing a reservation totaling in 8 hours).
Group Study can be booked for 3 hours, with no option for renewal. If a group wishes to renew the reservation, another member of the group is required to establish a reservation. At the end of the reservation, the key must be checked out to the other group member.
The Virtual Meeting Room can be booked for 2 hours, and can be renewed with prior approval from library staff/supervisor.
Virtual Meeting Room— Sterne, Room 135-A
Sterne Library offers one private meeting spaces for students, postdocs, faculty, and staff to utilize for interviews, Telehealth appointments, presentations, and virtual appointments. Reservations for these spaces is limited to 2 hours and are not permitted for study purposes. Individuals found to be using these spaces for activities outside the outlined above will be removed.
Long-term Study Carrels
Long-term carrels are available to UAB faculty, currently enrolled UAB graduate students, postdocs, and UAB students registered with Disability Student Services. Long-term carrels are available by the semester (6 months) or for the academic year (12 months) with opportunity for renewal.
Meeting Room - Sterne SL 174
The Sterne Library has a meeting space available for use by others on campus. The room has 9 “pods” of four seats for collaborative learning.

The Sterne Library's classroom, SL 174, is under the administrative direction of the UAB Libraries. The room is designed primarily for instruction by the library faculty for library instruction classes and workshops and for use by the University Writing Center (UWC). Library and UWC classes always have first priority for use of this room.
All reservations are subject to cancellation based on priority needs.
