UAB's new Division I softball team defeated Samford University 2-0 in its inaugural home game, held at George Ward Park on February 12, 2000. Twenty-three student-athletes comprised the new team which was coached by UAB alumna Marla Townsend. UAB President W. Ann Reynolds threw out the first pitch and several hundred fans turned out to watch the Blazer’s newest NCAA-level team.Image ID: A2004-03P
