Studying outdoors at Campbell Hall, circa 1980

In March 1976 ground was broken for a new academic building on the western side of the UAB campus.  The two-story University College Building No. 5 was opened on March 6, 1978, as home to several academic departments, including biology and psychology, and various administrative offices.  In April 1978 the building was renamed in honor of Dr. George W. Campbell, who had served as acting president of UAB from 1976 to 1977, as the first vice president for University College, and as the only dean of the College of General Studies.  Two additional floors were added to the top of the building in a project completed in 1991.
