Dr. Larry DeLucas, UAB's first astronaut, 1992

UAB alumnus and optometry faculty member Dr. Lawrence "Larry" DeLucas became UAB's first astronaut when he served as a Payload Specialist aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia on a 13-day mission which launched June 25, 1992.  DeLucas and the other crew about mission STS-50 conducted a wide range of micro-gravity experiments.  NASA launched Artemis II on April 1, 2026, as the first crewed mission traveling to lunar orbit since 1972.
