Historical Note | In 1961 the Jefferson County Medical Society moved into a new headquarters that had been constructed adjacent to the Birmingham Medical Center. In 1985 the JCMS and the University of Alabama at Birmingham agreed to jointly administer a new archival repository to collect history of the health sciences material and the new JCMS/UAB Health Sciences Archives was established. The venture was disbanded in 1992 and the university established its own archival repository. In 1994 all the material that had been housed in the JCMS/UAB entity was transferred to the UAB Archives. |
Scope and Contents | Includes photocopies of statistical tables, research papers, published works, reports, etc., that documents the history of the health sciences in the City of Birmingham, in Jefferson County, in the State of Alabama, and (to a lesser degree) the Southeastern US. |

Historical Note | McClellan "Ted" Van der Veer (1895-1961) was born in Kentucky but the family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early 1910s. He attended Tulane University and was a member of the school's baseball team. After working in the newspaper industry in New Orleans, in Lexington, Kentucky, and in Enid, Oklahoma, Van der Veer settled in Birmingham in 1925 when he accepted a position with his family's advertising agency. In Birmingham, the Van der Veer family were mainstays in the Roebuck Springs neighborhood for four decades. In 1935 he was named associate editor and chief editorial writer for the Birmingham Age-Herald newspaper. In 1943 he became chief editorial writer for the Birmingham News and in 1950 Van der Veer was named editor of the Birmingham News. Van der Veer was a member of the Alabama Press Association, American Society of Newspaper Editors, and the Birmingham Community Chest. In 1942 he was elected a Niemen Fellow at Harvard University and in 1980 he was posthumously named to the Alabama Newspaper Hall of Fame. Van der Veer died in New York City on the night of his return from a post-retirement trip to Europe. |

Historical Note | This collection may have been assembled by or for Howard L. Holley, MD (1914-1988), during his research into the medical history of Alabama. An Alabama native, Dr. Holley served as the first Anna Lois Waters Professor of Medicine at UAB from 1970 until 1984. In 1982 he published The History of Medicine in Alabama, and some of the material in this collection appears to have been used by Dr. Holley for this publication. Additional material may have been added when these research files were transferred over to the JCMS/UAB Health Sciences Archives. |
Scope and Contents | Includes correspondence, reports, organizational minutes, programs, newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, membership lists, and news clippings. The primary focus is Jefferson County and the City of Birmingham. |

After the JCMS/UAB facility was disbanded, the collection was transferred to the UAB Archives. |

Historical Note | Lister Hill (1894-1984) was a long-time member of the United States Congress and was a strong proponent of medical facilities, healthcare institutions, medical research, and libraries, particularly health sciences libraries. Joseph Lister Hill was born in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Dr. Luther L. and Lilly (Lyons) Hill. His father was a renowned American surgeon. Hill received an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1914 and a law degree in 1915. During the First World War, Hill served in the infantry division of the U.S. Army. In 1923 Hill was elected to the U.S. Congress as a member of the Alabama House delegation. In 1938 Rep. Hill was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the seat vacated by Dixie (Bibb) Graves. Hill would be re-elected by the Alabama voters five times. Senator Hill elected not to seek a fifth term and he retired from the Senate in January 1969 after a Congressional tenure that spanned 45 years. He retired to his home in Montgomery. |
Scope and Contents | This collection contains certificates, honorary diplomas, plaques, awards, and other items presented to Senator Lister Hill during his long tenure in the public arena. There are over 220 items in this collection. Note: The UAB Archives does not house the personal or Congressional papers of Senator Lister Hill. The Hill Papers are in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, at the University of Alabama library. |

Provenance | The items contained in this collection were donated to UAB by Senator Lister Hill or by members of the Senator's family. The major portion of this collection was donated by Senator Hill upon his retirement from the US Senate in 1969 for display in the Lister Hill Conference Room within UAB's University Hospital. They remained on display in University Hospital until transferred to the Lister Hill Library and the UAB Archives. The other parts of the collection were donated to UAB by the members of Senator Hill's family following his death in 1984. They were originally on display within the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences at UAB. |
