Historical Note William P. Niedermeier (1923-2004) was born in Evansville, Indiana.  He was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and became an officer in the Naval Reserves.  Following the war, Niedermeier obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University.  In 1949 he accepted an offer to work as a biochemist with Dr. Tom D. Spies in the Spies Nutrition Clinic in Birmingham.  At the clinic, Niedermeier studied sodium and potassium metabolism and continued his studies with the University of Alabama, receiving a master's degree in biochemsitry in 1953 and the Ph.D. in biochemstry in 1960.  When the clinic closed following Dr. Spies' death in 1960, Niedermeier accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Medical College of Alabama.  Dr. Niedermeier remained at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for the rest of his career and retired in 1987 as an associate professor of Biochemistry and Medicine.  He was the author of 100 scientific papers and was a member of numerous professional organizations and societies.  Even though retired, Niedermeier remained active and was one of the founders of UAB's New Horizons Group, a continual-learning group established for retirees, most of whom were retired from UAB.  He later helped found the Horizons Unlimited group for the Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City.
