As the summer term gets underway, the libraries are now on an abbreviated schedule; see the link below for open hours for both the Sterne and Lister Hill libraries. Please come see us for study room space, research help or to borrow books or equipment; we are here to help you be successful!

The UAB Libraries are excited to move forward with more improvements to the study rooms at Lister Hill and Mervyn Sterne Libraries. These study spaces will be receiving new tables and chairs conducive to enhancing your study and group activities. To prep and install the new furniture, study rooms will be temporarily unavailable for reservations during the week of May 14th – May 19th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but we are sure you will be pleased with the end results. We plan to reopen rooms for reservations as quickly as possible. Please stay tuned for updates on our progress.

Don’t forget, Sterne Library will have short hours next week during Spring Break 2023. The library will be open 7:00 am -5:00 pm, Monday, March 13 – Friday, March 17 and will be closed on the weekends. The 44th Annual Reynolds-Finley Historical Lecture will be held on Friday, March 10, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. in Lecture Room E of Volker Hall, 1670 University Boulevard, Birmingham, Alabama, 35233.

It will also be viewable online with the live link - https://uab.zoom.us/my/rfhl.lecture . "A Century of Maternity Care: Alabama's Highlights and Challenges" will be presented by Jenny M. Luke, Independent historian (former RN, CNM), and the 2017 Reynolds-Finley Research Fellow. A reception will follow. UAB Libraries will be closing their second instance of BrowZine, listed as University of Alabama at Birmingham, Health Sciences (instance ID 110) in the first week of February 2023. After this date, users who have account settings that need to be updated will be returned to the Choose Library screen, where they will need to select the remaining "University of Alabama at Birmingham" instance from the drop-down list. This is being done to provide an overall better user experience. Do you want to publish in a Wiley or Hindawi open access journal but don’t have funding to pay the required Article Processing Charge (APC)? Great news! The UAB Libraries now has a Read & Publish Agreement with Wiley that allows UAB authors to publish in Gold OA and hybrid OA journals at no cost to them. The Agreement covers the APC for nearly 2,000 Wiley and Hindawi journals.

Registration is now open for the Spring 2023 Business Research Toolkit. Get an overview of basic business research skills and resources including free online sources and UAB subscription databases in this free, seven-week asynchronous Canvas course.

During the 2022 winter break the UAB Libraries Chat with a Librarian service will be staffed 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Limited live chat hours will be in effect December 19, 2022 – January 6, 2023. Live chat will not be available on designated UAB Holidays on December 23, 26, 30, and January 2.

Many university libraries suspend their Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services during the holidays, making it difficult for us to fill our patrons’ requests.

For that reason, UAB Libraries will suspend our ILL services for borrowing between Saturday, December 17, 2022 and Monday, January 2, 2023.

During that time, new requests cannot be accepted, but previously requested materials may be picked up as usual, and previously requested photocopies will be e-mailed as usual.

Patrons may check the status of their requests at any time. Some requested materials may not arrive until after the new year.

We will resume normal ILL operations on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

In conjunction with UAB’s 2022 Toy Drive, UAB Libraries are again holding our Toys for Fines holiday charity drive to bring smiles to children who may not otherwise receive gifts this holiday season. Library users with overdue fines (current or prior) can have up to $20 waived when they donate a new, unwrapped toy for a child (infant through 16 years of age) to the Toys for Tots drive.
