Many university libraries suspend their Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services during the holidays, making it difficult for us to fill our patrons’ requests.
For that reason, UAB Libraries will suspend our ILL services for borrowing between Saturday, December 17, 2022 and Monday, January 2, 2023.
During that time, new requests cannot be accepted, but previously requested materials may be picked up as usual, and previously requested photocopies will be e-mailed as usual.
Patrons may check the status of their requests at any time. Some requested materials may not arrive until after the new year.
We will resume normal ILL operations on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

The UAB Libraries Office of Scholarly Communication (OSC) is excited to announce the launch of its Article Processing Charge (APC) Fund pilot program to help UAB authors pay for open access APCs. The program, with the support of the UAB Provost and the Dean of Libraries, has initial funding of $10,000 for fiscal year 2022 – 23. The UAB Libraries will fund up to $2,500 per article for UAB authors on a first-come, first-served basis. The pilot program is open at all UAB faculty, staff, and students, and funding must be used on a Gold Open Access Journal.
More information about the pilot program and a link to the funding application can be found on the Open Access APC Fund Pilot Program page. Have questions? Contact Jeff Graveline, Associate Dean for Research and Scholarly Communication, at jgraveli@uab.edu.

Come see the exhibit, Mental Health: A Complicated History, on display at Mervyn H. Sterne Library, just past the HUB desk on the entrance level. This exhibit discusses key themes such as the development of early diagnosis methods like the Rorschach inkblot test; the misdiagnosis of mental diseases for social or political reasons, such as in the case of female hysteria; an overview of PTSD and war-time trauma; the history of asylums, invasive treatments, psychoanalysis therapy, and more. Some of the unique UAB Libraries items featured include an electro-shock therapy machine (circa 1960s &70s); a first edition of the "Yellow Wallpaper" (1892), a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlighting the controversial “rest cure” to combat female neurasthenia; a letter written by a World War I veteran showing his struggle with shell shock; and many other historical items. For the most part, exhibit spans the 19th and 20th centuries, but there are some references to earlier and later treatment of mental illness to provide additional context.
The exhibit will be on display through November 7, 2022. For more information on the exhibit and the materials display, please contact Peggy Balch, Curator of the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library

We are pleased to introduce our newest display, Turning the Pages (TTP). Exhibited on a 55" touchscreen kiosk located on the first floor of Lister Hill Library, TTP allows users to interactively turn the pages and learn more about materials from UAB Libraries. Flip through some of our colorful Incunabula from the pre-1500s, or get a close up view of a letter written by George Washington to his dentist. These materials and others are now available to virtually explore. This innovative platform creates a safe environment for materials, and offers a more hands on experience for users. Come check it out today!
