Historical Note | Joseph F. Volker (1913-1989) was the founding dean of the UAB dental school, the first president of the independent UAB, and the first chancellor of the three-campus University of Alabama System. The New Jersey native received his education at Rutgers University, Indiana University, and the University of Rochester before accepting a position at Tufts University. He was recruited to Birmingham in 1948 to start the state's new dental school; he remained in Alabama for the rest of his life. Scope and Contents | This collection consists of over 750 photographs that document the life and career of UAB's first president from his childhood in Elizabeth, New Jersey, through his educational years, to his professional career in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. |
