| Historical Note | Joseph F. Volker (1913-1989) was the founding dean of the UAB dental school, the first president of the independent UAB, and the first chancellor of the three-campus University of Alabama System. The New Jersey native received his education at Rutgers University, Indiana University, and the University of Rochester before accepting a position at Tufts University. He was recruited to Birmingham in 1948 to start the state's new dental school; he remained in Alabama for the rest of his life.
