Historical Note | Champ Lyons (1907-1965) grew up in Mobile, Alabama, and obtained his medical degree in 1931 from Harvard. He held numerous positions in the Boston area until his service in World War II. At the end of the war, Dr. Lyons returned south and accepted positions in New Orleans, Louisiana. He remained there until 1950 when he returned to Alabama as the first full-time chair of the Department of Surgery at the university medical center in Birmingham. Dr. Lyons died at University Hospital following a brief illness. |
Scope and Contents | This small collection contains some of the personal papers of Champ Lyons, MD, some of the papers of the Lyons Family (chiefly condolence letters sent to Naomi Lyons upon the death of her husband), and some research material maintained by Dr. Martin Dalton, who authored a biography of Lyons in 2003. |
