Historical Note | Rebecca Agnew “Rebie” Holt was born in Gordon, Houston County, Alabama, on March 15, 1903 to Edward Rowell and Lizzie Elliott (Agnew) Holt. She attended the Montgomery public schools of Bellinger Hill School and Sidney Lanier High School and from 1920 to 1921 she attended the Women’s College of Alabama (now known as Huntingdon College ). From 1921 to 1923 she attended the University of Alabama. In 1925 she entered Johns Hopkins University and in 1929 received her master’s degree in bacteriology. Also in 1929, she became an instructor in bacteriology and pathology at the University of Alabama. In 1931 she accepted a position at Tulane University; she also later held teaching positions at the Medical College of Virginia and the Medical College of South Carolina. Because of health problems, she retired in 1962 and returned to her family home on Felder Avenue in Montgomery. She was active in several professional and social groups which included an appointment to the Alabama Civil War Centennial Commission. In 1988 she was inducted as an Honorary Member in the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Rebecca "Rebie" Holt died on November 1, 1990. |

Provenance | In 1989 Holt donated the material in this collection to UAB, via a gift to the dean of the medical school. The dean sent the items to the president of UAB who sent the material to the Reynolds Historical Library. The collection remained in the library until transfer to the UAB Archives. |
