Historical Note |
John Adams Reynolds was born on December 6, 1819 in Montgomery County, North Carolina, the oldest son of Neumon and Lucy Scarborough Reynolds. John Reynolds married Sarah Elizabeth Hugh on April 25, 1844 in Chambers County, Alabama. He received his medical degree from the Botanico-Medical College of Ohio on February 23, 1845 and returned to Alabama to begin his medical practice. John and his family lived in Barbour County and most of John and Sarah’s seven children were born in that county, including Dr. Robert Davis, the father of Dr. Lawrence Reynolds. John Reynolds passed away in Barbour County on September 17, 1891 and Sarah on March 15, 1906. Both were buried at the Bennett-Lee Cemetery, located near Pea River in Barbour County. |

Scope and Contents |
This collection consists of a handwritten book of prescriptions (with an index) and accounts for services rendered by Dr. John A. Reynolds. The first part of the book includes a variety of recipes for prescriptions for numerous diseases and medical conditions. The second part of the book includes accounts for services rendered by John A. Reynolds from 1863 to 1865. |
