Historical Note | Sir William Osler (1849-1919) was a Canadian-born physician who received a medical degree from McGill College in 1872. In 1884 he accepted a position in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1889 Dr. Osler became chief of medicine at the new Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Four years later, he became a professor of medicine at the new medical school at Johns Hopkins, which Dr. Osler would help become one of the greatest medical schools in America. In 1904 Osler accepted the position as Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University. Among his numerous awards and honors, Dr. Osler was created a Baronet in 1911. When he died in Oxford, the British medical journal The Lancet eulogized Dr. Osler as "the greatest personality in the medical world." |
