Historical Note | Clarence Langley Salter (1886-1977) graduated from the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile in 1911. Following an internship, Dr. Salter began the practice of medicine in Talladega, Alabama, working with Dr. Edward B. Wren. Salter became the Chief of Surgery at Citizen's Hospital in Talladega and was the physician in charge of the Dowling Hospital at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind (AIDB). Salter served as medical director at AIDB for 29 years until his retirement in August 31, 1968. Dr. Salter was most proud of his role in the establishment of Citizen's Hospital in Talladega and in the four-year medical school in Birmingham. In 1943 Alabama Governor Chauncey Sparks appointed Dr. Salter to the Alabama State Medical School Building Commission, the group charged with making the recommendation of the site of the proposed new four-year medical school. In 1944 the Commission recommended that the state's new school be located in Birmingham, and in 1945 the Medical College of Alabama opened in the Jefferson and Hillman Hospitals. At the Honors Convocation held at UAB on May 16, 1970, the University of Alabama School of Medicine presented Dr. Salter with an "Award of Special Recognition" for his important role in the development of the UAB Medical Center in Birmingham. |
