Historical Note Margaret Elinor Strange was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 23, 1914, to Dr. William Strange, Sr., and Bessie (Cragin) Strange.  She matriculated at Newcomb College and graduated in 1935 with a BS degree in chemistry.  She then studied medicine at Tulane, graduating in 1939.  Dr. Strange completed her internship and residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.  In December 1945 she met Dr. Clarence Klapper and they were married in New Orleans in 1946.  After their marriage, the couple made a decision to move to Birmingham where he received the appointment as an assistant professor of anatomy and she received an appointment as a part-time Instructor in Medicine at the new Medical Center in Birmingham.  They would hold a variety of positions during their decades-long careers at UAB.  The most notable of Margaret’s many responsibilities at UAB may be that of her leadership of the MIST Program, a program that enabled physicians to contact specialists at the Medical Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  She also volunteered in the Regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit (RNIC) at University Hospital.  Margaret and Clarence retired together on June 30, 1979 and were named as Professor Emeritus of Medicine (Margaret) and as Professor Emeritus of Anatomy (Clarence).  Later, the Klappers moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where Clarence passed away on March 15, 1990.  Remaining in Little Rock, Margaret became an active member of the Baptist Health System and volunteered with the neonatal intensive care unit.  On September 16, 2007, Dr. Margaret Strange Klapper passed away at the age of 93.  She was interred in the Metairie Cemetery in her native New Orleans.
