She attended the public schools in her hometown and graduated in 1934 with a degree in Secretarial Science from the Alabama College, State College for Women in Montevallo, Alabama (now the University of Montevallo). Her first job after college was with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Knoxville, Tennessee. During World War II, Keynton joined the Navy WAVES Program (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and was assigned to the Bureau of Ships in Washington, DC. In 1952 Keynton accepted a position in the office of U.S. Senator Lister Hill from Alabama; she remained with Senator Hill until she retired from the Civil Service in 1969. After she retired from Congress, Keynton worked in a financial consulting firm in the Washington area. She was an active member of the St. Thomas Parish Episcopal Church, located in DC's Dupont Circle neighborhood, and she served on the parish vestry. As her health began to fail, Keynton moved from DC to the Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, Virginia, a community supported by the Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard Residence Foundation to provide retirement living for personnel from those military branches. Rachel Keynton died on October 26, 2006, and was buried in her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama. |
