Historical Note | William Perkins Moseley was born on May 31, 1794, at Wheatland, his family's plantation in Buckingham County, Virginia. He was one of six children of Capt. Arthur Richard Moseley and Sarah Perkins. Capt. Arthur Moseley served in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolutionary War and later became a prosperous planter with more than 600 acres in Buckingham County. In 1790 Capt. Mosely built a home, which he named "Wheatland." William Perkins Moseley received his medical education at the Philadelphia medical school of the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced medicine in his native Buckingham County. He was a member of the Maysville Presbyterian Church and he served as an elder there from 1833 until his death. In 1826 Dr. Moseley married Nancy Anderson Trent, they were parents of thirteen children. Dr. Moseley died on April 2, 1863, and was buried at Wheatland. |
Scope and Contents | Two notebooks measuring 20cm x 17 cm each containing notes written while studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Both notebooks have been signed by Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison and both contain Harrison's personal library bookplate. |

Provenance | The Moseley notebooks were originally donated to UAB by Dr. Tinsely R. Harrison (1900-1978) and were housed at UAB in the Harrison Memorial Room in the Lister Hill Library. Dr. Harrison was a descendant of Dr. Moseley's sister and a descendant of the sister of Moseley's father, Capt. Arthur R. Moseley. Dr. Harrison likely obtained the notebooks from his father, Dr. W. Groce Harrison as the latter's signature and an inscription are found in one of the notebooks. The notebooks were transferred to the UAB Archives in 2002. |
