Name: S. Richardson Hill Papers

Historical Note: Samuel Richardson Hill, Jr., was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on May 19, 1923. In 1943 he received a B.A. degree in chemistry from Duke University, and in 1946 he received an M.D. degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. After a six-month Rockefeller Foundation tour of Europe, Dr. Hill began an internship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1954 Dr. Hill was recruited by Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison to the Medical Center in Birmingham where he became a professor of medicine and the first director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. In 1962 Dr. Hill was named dean of the Medical College of Alabama, he served until his appointment as vice president for Health Affairs in 1968. From 1977 until his retirement in 1987 Hill served as the second president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. S. Richardson Hill, Jr., was named a distinguished professor of UAB in 1987 and remained a force on campus as a consultant to the president until the spring of 1998. Dr. Hill remained active in the UAB and Birmingham communities until his death in Birmingham on July 4, 2003.

Scope & Contents: Includes correspondence, telegrams, press releases, minutes, certificates, plaques and awards.

Arrangement: Organized into four discrete series: 1. Papers, 1955-1991; 2. Papers, 1946-1986; 3. Certificates and Diplomas, 1936-1996; 4. Plaques, 1958-1985. The materials within each folder have been arranged chronologically.

Provenance: Dr. Hill donated some of his materials to the Jefferson County Medical Society/UAB Health Sciences Archives in August of 1987. These were eventually transferred to the UAB Archives along with other material from Dr. Hill in 1991 and 1992. Additional accessions of material were received from Dr. Hill in 1997 and 1998. The materials in these separate accessions have been organized and grouped with similar items in this collection.
