Historical Note: Tinsley Randolph Harrison was born in Talladega, Alabama, on March 18, 1900, the son of Dr. W. Groce Harrison, Sr., and Louisa (Bondurant) Harrison. In 1919 he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, and then enrolled in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he received his M.D. degree in 1922. After a residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1925 Dr. Harrison joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In 1941 Harrison helped organize the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and in 1944 he helped organize the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, serving as both chair of the medical department and dean of the medical school. In 1950 he was recruited to the Birmingham-based Medical Center of the University of Alabama where he became chair of the Department of Medicine and Director of the division of Cardiology. He also served a one-year acting deanship of the Medical College of Alabama from 1950 until 1951. Dr. Harrison resigned as chair of medicine in 1957 and as cardiology director in 1965. In 1964 Drs. Harrison and Champ Lyons were named Distinguished Professors by The University of Alabama Board of Trustees, the first such designations given to a member of the Alabama faculty. From 1945 until 1965, Dr. Harrison also served as editor-in-chief of Principles of Internal Medicine, a medical textbook which has been known as Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine for numerous years. After a lengthy illness, Tinsley R. Harrison died in Birmingham, on August 4, 1978.

Provenance: Materials originally donated to the Jefferson County Medical Society/UAB Health Sciences Archives by Dr. Harrison's sons. In 1992 the materials were transferred to the newly established UAB Archives.
