Historical Note | Tinsley Randolph Harrison was born in Talladega, Alabama, on March 18, 1900, the son of Dr. W. Groce Harrison, Sr., and Louisa (Bondurant) Harrison. In 1919 he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, and then enrolled in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he received his M.D. degree in 1922. After a residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1925 Dr. Harrison joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In 1941 Harrison helped organize the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and in 1944 he helped organize the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, serving as both chair of the medical department and dean of the medical school. In 1950 he was recruited to the Birmingham-based Medical Center of the University of Alabama where he became chair of the Department of Medicine and Director of the division of Cardiology. He also served a one-year acting deanship of the Medical College of Alabama from 1950 until 1951. Dr. Harrison resigned as chair of medicine in 1957 and as cardiology director in 1965. In 1964 Drs. Harrison and Champ Lyons were named Distinguished Professors by The University of Alabama Board of Trustees, the first such designations given to a member of the Alabama faculty. From 1945 until 1965, Dr. Harrison also served as editor-in-chief of Principles of Internal Medicine, a medical textbook which has been known as Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine for numerous years. After a lengthy illness, Tinsley R. Harrison died in Birmingham, on August 4, 1978. |

Provenance | The materials comprising this artificially created collection, which are all by or about Dr. Harrison or his family, have been donated to the UAB Archives by numerous individuals. At the time of the original donation of the first material in 1992, the University Archivist made the decision to group together all of these assorted Harrison materials into one collection; this artificial collection was created based upon these instructions. The collection has grown over the years as materials have been donated or sent to the repository by numerous individuals chief among them James A. Pittman, Jr., dean of the UAB medical school. Dr. Pittman had trained at UAB under Dr. Harrison and maintained a long-time friendship with Harrison. The finding aid for this collection includes information on the discrete donations. |
