The six-part series will cover information visualization, data management, text analysis and more, including training on how to use tools such as Tableau, OpenRefine, and TimelineJS.
All workshops will take place on Zoom; registration is required.
- Introduction to Digital Scholarship — 1 p.m. Feb. 11
Taught by Grayson Murphy, Digital Initiatives and Preservation Librarian, this workshop will introduce the concept and practice of digital scholarship, or “digital humanities,” in academia. It also will cover techniques, a sampling of tools used in the practice and examples of notable digital scholarship projects and tips for getting started on your own project. Taught by Khushi Karra, applications developer for Library IT Services, will introduce Tableau, a user-friendly tool for turning data into clear, interactive visualizations, and share basics on connecting data, exploring and organizing information and creating simple charts and dashboards. No prior experience with Tableau is required; register online. - Spring Cleaning Data with OpenRefine — 11 a.m. March 4
Taught by Marla Hertz, Ph.D., Research Data Management Librarian, this session will cover the basics of OpenRefine, an open-source, secure tool for cleaning messy data. Hertz also will provide tips for how to clean, transform and organize tabular data efficiently. Register online. - Introduction to Text Analysis — 11 a.m. March 18
Taught by Murphy, this workshop will introduce the practice of text analysis, a broad term for the process of analyzing and understanding written language using various computational methods. It also will cover the multiple phases of text analysis, including sourcing and building text data sets, cleaning text data, various summary and analysis methods and text visualizations. Taught by Murphy, this workshop will share how to build interactive, media-rich timelines for the web using TimelineJS, a helpful tool for visualizing how events, people and places fit within a chronological context. Participants will learn how to build a timeline, find sources of media to include, and publish and share the timeline. Register online.
