A new read-and-publish agreement between UAB Libraries and journal publisher Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press will enable UAB authors to have their article processing fees (APCs) waived when publishing in select journals — meaning a savings of around $1,600 per author.
The agreement with Cold Spring Harbor is the third new agreement this year; in January 2025, UAB Libraries added two additional agreements with Mary Ann Liebert Inc. and The Company of Biologists in early 2025. Previously established read-and-publish agreements with Wiley, Springer Nature, Cambridge Publishing, Royal Society of Chemistry, and others have saved UAB authors more than $1.8 million in costs associated with open access publishing since 2021.
“UAB Libraries is committed to making it easier for UAB authors to publish open access,” said Jeff Graveline, J.D., associate dean for Research and Scholarly Communication and director of the Office of Scholarly Communication in UAB Libraries. “We want the innovative research and scholarship done at UAB to be available at no cost to anyone who wants to read it, and prioritizing open access publishing opportunities helps us do that.”
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press publishes five primary research journals and three review journals and has published more than 200 books. Under the new agreement, fully peer-reviewed research, review, and case study articles accepted for publication are eligible for open access publishing in Genes & Development, Genome Research, Learning & Memory, and RNA.
To qualify, authors must currently be affiliated with UAB; any additional qualifications can be found online. Contact Graveline (jgraveli@uab.edu) in the Office of Scholarly Communication with questions.
