Patrons can browse the LoT online using the catalog or in person on new shelves near the Sterne HUB Desk and LibLab. The collection includes outdoor games such as Spikeball, badminton, cornhole and pickleball; crafting items such as sets of crochet hooks and knitting needles, a handheld sewing machine and a label-maker; board and card games such as Uno, Ticket to Ride and Cards Against Humanity; and several LEGO sets and puzzles.
LoT items have a loan period of seven days with an option for one renewal.
“We’re so excited to begin growing our Library of Things,” said Sydney Orason, who is the English Composition and Student Success Librarian in UAB Libraries and organized the new collection in collaboration with the Technology and Technical Services and User Access departments. “We hope these items can help Blazers relax and enjoy a break from daily stressors, whether that’s through playing an outdoor game with your friends or enjoying a solo hour assembling a Lego set.”
The Library of Things is not UAB Libraries’ only curated collection of what some may consider “nontraditional” library materials: Items such as VR headsets, iPads, vlogging kits, Raspberry Pis, Go Pro cameras, and more are available for checkout from the LibLab @ Sterne and the LibLab @ Lister Hill, and more than 2,000 DVDs are available for checkout from the DVD Collection.
