In 2006, UAB Libraries established the Digital Collections as an online repository to meet the increasing digital preservation and accessibility needs of the university and libraries. The purpose of the digital collections is to preserve, promote, and make accessible the university and library resources, ensuring the highest quality information for teaching, scholarship, research, and service within the UAB community.

To manage the growing number of digital collections and facilitate collaboration with stakeholders across the university, the Digitization and Digital Preservation department was established. This department coordinates the acquisition and preservation of new collections, ensuring the continuous enhancement of digital accessibility for the university's resources, student and faculty accomplishments, and publications.
