Historical Note Ferdinand Phinizy Calhoun, Jr. (1910-1995), was an Atlanta native who became the fourth generation of his family to be associated with the medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Calhoun graduated in 1936 from the Johns Hopkins medical school and completed a fellowship in pathology.  He interned at the Massachusetts General Hospital and completed a residency in ophthalmology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.  In 1941 Dr. Calhoun received an appointment as instructor at Emory University.  In 1942 he enrolled in the U.S. Army Medical Corps; he was later deployed to England and France.  Dr. Calhoun was on duty in France at the end of the Second World War.  While in France, Dr. Calhoun met a nurse, Mary Ellen Van Horn, who would become his wife at the end of the war.  When the Calhouns returned to the US after the war, Dr. Calhoun returned to Emory University.  He served as chair of the ophthalmology department from 1950 until 1978.  He was also the director of the Montgomery Laboratory of Ophthalmic Pathology and was instrumental in the development of the Georgia Lions Eye Bank.  Dr. F. Phinizy Calhoun, Jr., died in 1995.
Scope and Contents This small manuscript collection contains the papers of Dr. F. Phinizy Calhoun, Jr., a well-known ophthalmologist in Atlanta, Georgia.

Provenance The material comprising this collection was originally donated to UAB in 1997 by the widow and the children of Dr. Calhoun.  The family donated to the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences a collection of instruments that had belonged to Dr. Calhoun; the material in this collection was included in that donation and was transferred from the museum to the UAB Archives in 2017.
