Historical Note William Sterling Edwards, III, was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 23, 1920.  Following his 1938 graduation from Phillips High School, Sterling entered the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).  He graduated from VMI with a bachelor's degree and then entered the medical school of the University of Pennsylvania.  Sterling Edwards received his medical degree in 1945 and then completed an internship at Massachusetts General Hospital.  After his internship, Dr. Edwards entered the US Army Medical Corps and was assigned to the Valley Forge Hospital in Pennsylvania.  After military service, Edwards completed a surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Edwards was encouraged to contact Dr. Champ Lyons in Birmingham concerning a position at the Medical College of Alabama.  Dr. Lyons offered him the position as instructor and in June 1952 the Edwards family moved to Birmingham where Dr. Edwards began work at the medical college.  In 1953 Edwards was promoted to assistant professor of Surgery and he eventually received the appointment of associate professor and professor.  Edwards conducted research on artery grafts, heart valve defects, and other cardiovascular issues.  In 1969, Dr. Edwards left UAB and joined the faculty of the surgery department at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.  He established the university's training program in cardiovascular surgery and served as chair of the Department of Surgery from 1974 until 1987.  Upon his retirement, Dr. Edwards was named a professor emeritus, and the university established an endowed professorship in his honor.  Dr. W. Sterling Edwards, III, died at his home in Albuquerque on June 28, 2004.
