Historical Note The UAB Safe Zone program is as a campus-wide program that promotes a safe climate for all students, faculty, and staff regardless of sexual orientation or identity. The program trains volunteers on the needs and concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals to provide an environment in which all people are treated with dignity and respect. This training helps to create a visible network of volunteers for individuals seeking assistance and information.  An advisory committee comprised by four faculty, four staff, and four students, was created by Dr. Virginia Gauld, Vice President for Student Affairs.  The committee, which was chaired by Dr. Glenda R. Elliott, professor emerita of Education, first met on January 26, 2001.  In the fall 2001, the Safe Zone program began as a service project of the Gay/Straight Student Alliance (GSSA). The GSSA and the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) provided funding for materials and training. Faculty, staff, and student volunteers carried out the first training workshops and managed the program. The first training workshop was held in November 2001 for the Resident Assistants in Residential Student Life. The first campus-wide training occurred in February 2002. In September 2003, the Student Life Division of Student Affairs assumed responsibility for overseeing the Safe Zone program. With the move to Student Affairs, UAB HRM Training and Development offered volunteer training and the program expanded its services to include faculty and staff. The UAB Safe Zone Program is jointly coordinated by the Office of Student Life and the university’s HRM office.
