UAB Libraries proudly present its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Task Force. This new task force has been charged with developing and proposing short-and long-term DEI goals to the Dean of Libraries. Additionally, it initiates and supports Libraries’ services, policies and programming focused on DEI. The task force hopes to collaborate with UAB’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as to identify other campus and community partners.

Curated by Dr. Dennis G. Pappas, Sr., this exhibit explores the history of otolaryngology through the many books and instruments he has donated to the Reynolds-Finley Historical Library and the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Registration for the Business Research Toolkit will open Monday, January 18th. The toolkit will run from January 29th-March 18th, 2021. The hands-on program introduces participants to business resources and research strategies. The toolkit is open to any current UAB faculty, staff, or student and is completely free of charge.

The program consists of 9 modules (5 required and 4 elective), each of which take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. You must pass 7 of the 9 modules to receive the certificate of completion. Each module is offered online in an asynchronous format within Canvas. It takes 7 weeks to complete the toolkit at the pace of one module per week.

The UAB Libraries have been selected by the Southeastern Atlantic region (SEA) of the Network of the National Library of Medicine to host a fully virtual Library Carpentry Workshop in Spring 2021. The workshop will be divided into four separate sessions. Each virtual session will be held 8:30 am – 12:30 pm on January 22nd, February 26th, March 26th, and April 23rd.

Workshop content will be introductory and no data or programming background is needed to participate. Library Carpentry workshops are an excellent professional development opportunity for anyone interested in enhancing their data-related research or professional skills.

The workshop session topics are:

  1. January 22, Tidy Data and Regular Expressions.
  2. February 26, OpenRefine.
  3. March 26, The Unix Shell.
  4. April 23, Git.

To participate, registrants must have access to an internet connection and a personal computer with the Zoom videoconferencing client, the Bash Shell, OpenRefine, and Git installed. A dual monitor or two-device setup is strongly recommended, but not required. Additional information on preparing for the workshop is available on the workshop site.
