Cell Phones

The Library's goal is to provide an environment that supports scholarship, research, and study. The use of cell phones in the Library is often distracting to others. Therefore, we request that cell phones be placed in a silent mode while in the building.

Use of cell phones is permitted in the first floor lobby area between the north and west entrances.

Internet and Computer Use

Lister Hill Library has 30 computers available for public use. All computers except the kiosk on the 2nd floor near the stairs for access to the catalog require a UAB Blazer ID and password or Guest login (available at the HUB) to log in. 19 computers are located on the first floor and 11 are located on the 2nd floor.

All library computers, as well as any of the library resources, are available to assist with the education, research, and clinical needs of the UAB Community. Community users who are students of other area colleges/universities with a valid school ID may gain access to use the public computers. Any member of the general public with a health information need may gain access to use the public computers by requesting a guest login.

Lister Hill Library’s Blazer ID login computers are set to log out after 15 minutes of inactivity for your own safety.

Lister Hill Library is enabled with wireless access for two wireless networks. The recommended network for faculty, staff, and students is UABSecure. For everyone else, use UABStartHere.

For more information on setting up your device to connect to wifi, see UAB Information Technology's instructions on "Using the UAB WiFi Network."

If you are unable to connect to the wireless network after consulting the instructions above, you will need to call AskIT (205.996.5555) for further assistance.

Unattended Children

The Library provides an unsupervised environment for the purpose of academic research and scholarship in support of the academic programs of UAB. This environment is not intended to provide Library staff to support unattended or unsupervised children.

Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian. Parents and guardians are responsible for the conduct of their children while on Library premises and must provide reasonable supervision of their children.

Should an unattended or unsupervised child be discovered, the staff will try to locate or telephone the parent or guardian. If the parent or guardian is not located, a staff member may contact the UAB Police Department to report the situation of an unattended child and/or seek assistance with such children.
