Historical Note Gilbert F. Douglas (1888-1985) was born in Choctaw County, Alabama, and attended the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile from 1906 until 1910.  During his time of study, control of the school wa assumed by the University of Alabama and the school became the university's medical department.  Following graduation, Dr. Douglas completed graduate work in New York and in Paris, France.  During the First World War, Douglas was on active duty in France with the 313th Infantry and the 316 Infantry units and as a member of the US Medical Corps.  After the war, Dr. Douglas moved to Birmingham and established a private practice and also holding staff appointments at Hillman, Baptist and University Hospitals, and at South Highlands Infirmary.  In 1945 he became an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Alabama, Birmingham's new four-year medical school administered by the University of Alabama.  Dr. Douglas retired in 1958 and was named as a professor emeritus.  He died in Birmingham at the age of 97.
Scope and Contents Collection consists of 23 notebooks kept by Gilbert F. Douglas, all but one created during his attendance at the Medical College of Alabama in Mobile.  The other notebook dates from his time at the Medical Officers Training Camp in 1917.
