Historical Note George R. Eaves was born 30 July 1858 in Stratford-on-Avon, England. Following his education, Eaves undertook missionary work in Japan for the London Missionary Society. Eaves preached throughout Japan and also cared for cholera victims. In 1887 Eaves contracted tuberculosis and was advised to seek a cure in the mountains outside of the city of Tokyo. Eaves, however, did not heed their advice and continued his work until 1888 when with his wife and son, he traveled to San Francisco for a rest cure. He then took up a new church assignment in Denver, Colorado. After two years, he moved into rural Colorado and served a small mountain church, and his health improved. With the hope of establishing a large church in Birmingham, Eaves came to Alabama's largest city in 1908, but again his health failed. Threatened with his own worsening tuberculosis, Eaves focused more and more of his efforts on combating the disease. In 1910, he led efforts to found the Jefferson County Anti-Tuberculosis Association. Soon thereafter, Jefferson County acquired property on Red Mountain where a camp was established for the care of indigent tuberculosis patients. In 1912, Eaves became secretary of the tuberculosis association and worked tirelessly to expand and improve care for tuberculosis patients. The camp was soon moved to a larger site on Red Mountain and renamed the Red Mountain Sanatorium. Eventually, Eaves’ own health forced him to retire from pastoral work, but he continued to promote the cause of the Jefferson County Anti-Tuberculosis Association until his death in Birmingham in 1926. During his years in Alabama, he also served as secretary of the Alabama Tuberculosis Association and was active in the National Tuberculosis Association.
