Historical Note Marcel Proust (1871-1922) was a French novelist and essayist whose best known work is his multi-volume A la recherche du temps perdu [Remembrance of Things Past or In Search of Lost Time].  The first volume of the novel was published in 1913 and became a great success; it has never been out-of-print.  Proust died in Paris on November 18, 1922, at the age of 51.

There are numerous works to be consulted for a complete biography of Proust, including William C. Carter's Marcel Proust: A Life (2002).
Scope and Contents Fifteen multi-page holograph letters from Proust to the Duc de Guiche and to the Duchesse de Clermont-Tonnerre.

All of the letters in the collection have been scanned and are now available in the Marcel Proust Collection within the UAB Libraries Digital Collections site at https://uab.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/

Provenance The 15 letters in this collection were purchased by UAB in 1988 and first displayed to the public during the "Marcel Proust at UAB" event in the fall of 1988.  Originally, the letters were housed with the University's collection of published Proust material in the Mervyn H. Sterne Library.  Upon the administrative merger of Sterne and the Lister Hill Library, the Proust Letters were transferred to the UAB Archives in the fall of 2014.
